With the disposition of a large and valuable property at stake, our client retained us to enable redevelopment of a former manufactured gas plant (MGP). Apex designed, performed, and managed site assessment, risk characterization, and remediation activities. We identified potential risks posed by  MGP wastes,  developed site-specific risk based cleanup criteria, and employed several remediation methods to successfully prepare the property for redevelopment.  We utilized dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) recovery and stabilization and on-site reuse techniques, and installed a cap as well as a bulkhead to prevent the migration of MGP liquids into an adjacent river. As of 2011, the site is ready for redevelopment and use as an electrical substation and ground mounted solar energy generating facility.

Providing reliable, low-cost electric power is the goal of many power generators.  A Fortune 500 power generation company wanted to upgrade their generating capacity by installing a new unit at one of their largest facilities.  The proposed design of the new unit set the environmental standard for clean pulverized coal-fueled electric generation.  Apex led the expert witness team for high profile hearings to support the state-of-the-art environmental emissions control technologies for the proposed new unit installation.  The air permit was approved based on the technical merits presented by the expert witness team.
